Her first solo album, Sea Sew, made in just two weeks, was nominated for the Mercury music prize in and a follow-up, Passenger, came out last September. I remember sitting in a car seat, at an angle, looking out of the window, singing the backing vocals to Joni Mitchell's "Conversation" with my brother.
I must've been about three. My mother would be sitting in front, with her long blonde hair, and she would be Joni Mitchell. We used to go down to west Cork on holiday, so we had a few tapes in the car for the six-hour journey. Ladies of the Canyon sticks in my mind the most, and I still love that record so much — it was part of the foundations of my musical life.
Myself and my best friend would listen to Bad and dance all day long. We got completely obsessed. I found the tape again recently but because the artwork was all folded up and the seams had become worn, when I took it out it fell apart.
Obviously my tiny fingers had loved it too much. It makes me feel quite happy, thinking of my younger self being so excited by it. All tickets sold out in minutes when they went on sale on Thursday morning and it is likely the venue could put on 10 Damien Rice shows and not be able to keep up with demand.

Intriguingly, it's just one of three concerts that Rice has pencilled into his diary for — the other shows take place in destinations less travelled for the singer-songwriter: Known as Dodi Ma back then, Juniper were tipped for the big time but the band split in before they could release a debut album. I was reading a lot of the recent press, and you just might be the most liked person on the web. Do you think there was added pressure in writing and recording a new album because of how well your debut was received? I just wanted to make a better record.
And I really wanted to get ten songs together that I felt were strong and cohesive and lyrically interesting, and not have any dips. And you got to sing with Ray LaMontagne, which is exciting.

How did that come about? And I really wanted a duet on the record, like a proper duet with two people signing to each other. And so I had my tiny list, which was pretty much Ray and maybe Tony Bennett.
And I sort of asked him through his manager because I wanted him to be able to say no. But he said yes, so it was great.
And he happened to be in London, so it was very serendipitous how it all happened. It was funny—I sort of expected his voice to be much more, sort of, strong and gravelly. Was it a big thing for you before, this idea of making it in America? I think people maybe have a skewed idea of what making it in America is. That level of making it is, you know — I have fully made it.
